So that was a message from Grain expressing his glee for the nice words shared about his first starring role in his own comic book. Every now and then he'll exit the realm of imagination and provide me some feedback too, and it looks like I'm doing a decent job. Tricky fella though. Doesn't like to stay in one spot for too long. And Bubble, he (it?) is a moody one. Trying not to get on his bad side.

I'm excited to share the recent surprise review about Grain's first issue. Feels great that people are expressing their joy to this project. Well, that was a surprise.

I just read the first issue of GRAIN by Mark Verma and Roma Gewska. From the cover, it looked as though it was going to be a children's fantasy, and it is to a degree, but that's just the surface. Gewska's art is simply gorgeous - it may as well be dripping with honey it's so sweet - but Verma's script goes far deeper than I would have expected.

Grain's narration seems childlike and yet, like the book itself, there's far more to it than the sugar-coating suggests. Grain's speech patterns are as fragmented as his memories and it ends up becoming poetic in it's intentional oddness. By the end of the book, I was left stunned by the unusual tone and the shocking revelations, and now I need to read the next issue. There are so many questions that need to be answered.

I am so glad I took a chance on this book. I've never read anything quite like it and with so many comics out there saying the same things over and over again, generally featuring superheroes, it's a genuine pleasure to find something as different and as good as this.
